Santa Maria della Scala is a museum complex in Siena, located in front of the city’s cathedral. It was once one of the oldest and biggest hospitals in Europe, on Via Francigena. Today it is an important museum which is home to a series of collections ranging from antiquity (National Archaeological Museum of Siena) to the modern period, alternating majestic monuments with narrow corridors, networks of tunnels dug into the rock and large spaces with vaulted ceilings made of bricks, a total area of 40,000mq.
