DESCRIPTION

The Fortezza Vecchia is an ancient fortification that sits on the edge of Porto Mediceo in Livorno. It is an asymmetrical building made up of three bastions and a solid 13th-century tower, from which you can see most of the Tuscan Archipelago. Built on the orders of the Medici family, construction began in 1519 by Florentine Antonio da Sangallo. The Second World War caused huge damage to the Fort, and restoration works began in the 1970s.
