DESCRIPTION
Carrara is the most important centre in the world for the extraction and working of the famous Carrara marble, a very precious white marble extracted from the nearby Apuan Alps. The oldest nucleus of the city is made up of the Parish Church of Sant’Andrea (St. Andrew) which dates back to the 13th century and has now become a picturesque Cathedral. Other historical buildings of interest include: Palazzo Cybo-Malaspina, in which the Academy of Fine Arts is located, and the Church of the Suffragio.
