DESCRIPTION
The Medici Chapels were built as a burial place for the Medici family. Today, they are a state museum, adjacent to the Basilica of San Lorenzo. The two parts of the complex that can be visited are the Sagrestia Nuova (New Sacristy) designed by Michelangelo, who carved the two funeral monumets inside it, and the seventeenth century Cappella dei Principi (Chapel of the Princes), in which there are the sarcophagi of six Grand Dukes of Tuscany.
