Golden Globes 2025: 7 nominations for “The Brutalist” filmed in Tuscany

Three nominations also for Cuaron’s thriller series Disclaimer

Musical thriller Emilia Perez and post-World War Two epic The Brutalist topped the roster of films nominated for the 2025 Golden Globes, the Hollywood honors that kick off the awards season leading to the Oscars. The Brutalist scored seven nods: Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director — Motion Picture, Best Performance by a Male Actor (Adrien Brody), Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Guy Pearce), Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role (Felicity Jones), Best Screenplay – Motion Picture (Bardy Corbet and Mona Fastvold), Best Original Score (Daniel Blumberg).

Locations

The Brutalist, written and directed by Brady Corbet, was filmed for several weeks in Carrara on April 2023. The set involved the city’s historic centre, Corso Rosselli, Drogheria Riacci, the Bettogli Quarry and the Corsi Quarry in Colonnata. The cast included Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones.

An historical drama

The movie chronicles the journey of Hungarian-born Jewish architect László Tóth (Brody), who emigrates to the United States of America in 1947. Initially forced to toil in poverty, he soon wins a contract that will change the course of the next 30 years of his life. Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Alessandro Nivola and Jonathan Hyde also star in the film, which Corbet co-wrote with his wife Mona Fastvold (“The Sleepwalker”).

Disclaimer

The thriller series Disclaimer has been nominated in three categories: for best performance by Cate Blanchett and by Kevin Kline, Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made For Television. Alfonso Cuarón’s series filmed in Tuscany. Filming took place for four weeks between September and October 2022 in Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi, Pisa and Massa Carrara.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Renée Knight, Disclaimer follows acclaimed journalist Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett), who “built her reputation revealing the misdeeds and transgressions of others.” Per the logline, “When she receives a novel from an unknown author, she is horrified to realize she is now the main character in a story that exposes her darkest secrets. As Catherine races to uncover the writer’s true identity, she is forced to confront her past before it destroys both her own life and her relationships with her husband Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen) and their son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee).”
