Enzo d’Alò’s new animation – A Greyhound of a Girl (Mary e lo spirito di mezzanotte) – been selected for competition in the “Generation Kplus” strand at the Berlin International Film Festival will be released on 4/11/23.
The director, screenwriter and animation master from Campania, globally famous for successes such as How the Toys saved Christmas; Lucky and Zorba; Momo, the Conquest of Time; Opopomoz and Pinocchio, has brought a fascinating coming of age story to the big screen.
Synopsis
It stars Mary, an exuberant 11-year-old with no shortage of bravado and an irrepressible love of cooking. She has a special relationship with her grandmother, Emer, who encourages her to pursue her dream of becoming a great chef. But every path has its obstacles, often unpredictable, and tackling them can become an adventure. Mary begins a thrilling journey that will break the confines of time, where four generations of women share experiences and gain a deep understanding of each other. It is a delicate, and witty, story of growth.
The animation was created in part by Manifatture Digitali Cinema Prato thanks to a residency grant from the Toscana Film Commission. The music also has links to Tuscany: the string section was recorded at the Teatro dei Rinnovati in Siena by participants in the first Bottega di Alta Specializzazione “Film Scoring Course” supported by the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and Toscana Film Commission.

Loosely based on Roddy Doyle’s novel, A Greyhound of a Girl, the film was written by d’Alò with Dave Ingham and produced by Paul Thiltges Distributions, Aliante, Jam Media, GOAG Productions, Rija Films, Amrion Production and Fish Blowing Bubbles, with the contribution of Film Fund Luxembourg, Eurimages, Italy’s Culture Ministry, the Toscana Film Commission and Regione Campania.
The film, due for theatrical distribution by BiM Distribuzione, was also supported by a grant from the Regione Campania (ref. fondi POR Campania FESR 2014-2020). In addition to numerous artists from the region, animation specialists Digitalcomoedia and Tile Storytellers worked on the set design and animation, colour correction and pre-edit of the film.
