DESCRIPTION
Volterra is famous for the extraction and working of alabaster and, during the Middle Ages, it was an important episcopal seignory. Today, the authentic historical centre of Etruscan origin still remains, with Roman ruins (among which the Semi-circular Theatre) and medieval buildings like the Cathedral, the Medicea Fortress and the Palazzo dei Priori in the square of the same name.
