DESCRIPTION
The Mascagni Terrace, one of the most elegant and picturesque locations in Livorno, is located on the seafront at the end of Viale Italia. The area, now home to this viewpoint, was once the site of a small fortress that was part of the coast’s defence system. The characteristic floor consists of an 8,700-mq chessboard formed by 34,800 black and white tiles. The Terrace was dedicated to Costanzo Ciano. In the post-war period it was extended significantly towards the north, using the ruins of the city centre destroyed by the bombing, and was therefore re-dedicated to Livornese composer Pietro Mascagni.
